Biomass materials are rich in sources and are precious resources bestowed by nature to human beings. Among them, woody biomass represented by wood, bamboo, and crop straw is one of the most abundant biomass materials in nature and is widely distributed all over the world. As a class of ancient materials, woody biomass such as wood has always played an important role in the history of human development. However, it was not until the emergence of more advanced characterization and experimental techniques in modern times that people began to understand the more microscopic structure and chemical components of woody biomass. With the deepening of understanding, it is found that woody biomass has a unique hierarchically porous structure, and its main components are cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Such unique hierarchically porous structure and components with rich functional groups provide a large multi-scale engineering space, and the regulation of its structure and components can improve the performance of woody biomass materials and even endow them with new functions. Sustainable and recyclable utilizing of biomass resources is regarded one promising way toward achieving the sustainable development and carbon neutrality goals of our society.
Wuhan University Biomass Engineering and Sustainable Utilization Laboratory (X-BIOMASS LAB) was established in 2021. Our laboratory is oriented to the carbon neutrality and plastic ban strategies of China and the United Nations, aiming to solving the material-energy-environmental challenges of our society by developing biomass-based low-carbon functional materials and products from the renewable biomass resources, especially agricultural and forestry waste resources. Specifically, we focus on developing green processing strategies, high value-added utilization technologies and comprehensive environmental assessment means of biomass materials, providing a sustainable solution for biomass utilization and petrochemical product substitution.
